How do you choose which hotels to review?

We look for one thing done properly rather than everything done adequately. A single room with a considered window will get written up here ahead of a well-run property with nothing memorable in it.

In practice that means we cover a lot of small places — guesthouses, restored houses, ten- and twenty-room hotels — and very few resorts. It is not a rule against large hotels. It is that scale and specificity tend to pull in opposite directions.
