How much cheaper is travelling out of season?

Across the destinations covered here, accommodation typically falls between 25% and 50% below the peak rate, and the drop is steepest in places with a short, intense season — ski towns in the autumn, Mediterranean coast in November, island destinations outside the ferry timetable.

Flights are less predictable and occasionally more expensive, because carriers cut frequency at the same time. Book the flight first and the rooms afterwards; the rooms will still be there.

Where you do not save

Car hire in winter often costs more once winter tyres are included, and any activity requiring a guide is priced per group rather than per person — which means a quiet season can make a private guide cheaper and a shared excursion dearer.
